Today, the original WORD book group discussed Carson McCullers’s Ballad of the Sad Cafe and Other Stories. As per usual, some folks liked it more than others. We mostly agreed that she’s an excellent writer, and that even though sometimes she tells rather than shows it still works out really well. We also agreed that her life is fascinating and after reading, we really wanted to know more about her (although most of the group wasn’t necessarily interested in reading more of her books).
Next month we’re reading Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, which is a super-creepy novel set in a cordoned-off region of Florida known as Area X. An expedition of scientists has been sent in, and bad things are happening to them. It’s pretty great.
